so, what IS here?

I think it would be fair to say that nobody at The World Championships in Athletics took the world’s eye like Usain Bolt. He’s since even had a national motorway named after him. Click here to see how Usain Bolt caught my eye (with the help of some VERY high speed lenses, lent to me by the incredibly generous folk at Canon).

Welcome and thanks for visiting this compilation of photos - the highlights, energy, determination, and the spirit of the World Championships in Athletics, Berlin 2009 - mostly focussing on the outstanding Jamaican Athletics Team.

I guess i better introduce myself too. My name is Oliver Wright. I like to take pics. In August 2009 I was asked to join The Jamaica Gleaner & SportsCaribe.com to cover the 12th World Championships in Athletics, for web & print news.

Above all, in putting these personal photo sets together, i’ve tried to convey the huge personalities that attended, broke world records, and, well, had a tonne of fun doing it. I hope this comes across and you enjoy what you see :-)

2nd to the podium: team relayteam_relay.html

I enjoyed shooting the women and men’s relays the most during the ten day period of The World Championships in Athletics. Perhaps it was because by then i’d learned all about the ever changing light in the stadium. Perhaps it was because those amazingly generous folk at Canon lent me an EOS 5D Mark III for the day. Or perhaps it’s because...

2nd place team effort: tongues outtongues_out.html

Now, maybe it’s my sense of humour, or maybe it’s a globally known fact that was unknown to me - but i couldn’t help spotting how many of the athletes, from all over the world, well.... stuck out their tongues. For cooling down maybe?

It’s not all about winning - it’s about taking part. Said someone. Perhaps they hadn’t seen the glee of glory enjoyed by The Winning World Champions in Athletics. The juries out... you decide. Click to see Jamaica & The World smile :-)

Wether it’s reaching out for that extra millimeter in the long jump, or a meditative focus to pull all energy into the mind - all sporting events make for some fascinating expressions, poses, and.... er, well, you’ll see :-)

Humour & candid-catching aside, there is of course some seriously hard work that goes along with training to become a world class athlete. Here’s a tribute to the results of this work & the sincere concentration on both sides of lens.
